The Boycott Of Jewish Businesses

April 1, 1933

The Boycott

The national boycott operation marked the beginning of a nationwide campaign by the Nazi party against the entire German Jewish population.  Many Germans ignored the boycott and shopped at the Jewish stores during the day – a sign that the anti-Semitism wasn’t wholly approved of at that point.

The Star of David was painted in yellow and black across Jewish-owned stores and professional workplaces such as doctors’ offices etc. They placedwith signs that said “Don’t Buy from Jews!” (Kauf nicht bei Juden!), “The Jews Are Our Misfortune!” (Die Juden sind unser Unglück!)

Joseph Goebbels was a virulent anti-Semite.  He is pictured here stirring up the crowd of civilians and encouraging them to fight “world Jewry.”
