These Jewish women from Slovakia were asked to retake their passport photos shortly after Czechoslovakia was broken up by Hitler. Slovakia became a willing collaborator with Hitler and almost all of its 60,000 Jews would be deported to their deaths. These unindexed photos are candid shots of women at the clandestine end of their lives (90% of those pictured would perish in the coming 5 years) in a time of turmoil beyond comprehension. Young; old; pretty; modest; rich; and poor, the one thing these women have in common is that they are all Jewish and living during the time of the Holocaust.
